I pitched up late (6.15pm) at Cooden to find a couple of people out - one on a 5.8 and 85ltr board and the other on a 7.5 and a big board. It didn't look particularly windy, but I couldn't face rigging my 7.8m, as it hasn't had an outing for so long. Instead, I went for a 6.5m and big 120ltr board. The guy with the 5.8 was packing up, kites were falling out of the sky and the guy on the 7.5 wasn't planing. I didn't hold out much hope, but I'd just legged it down from London, so I wasn't going to give up easily.

Stepped onto the board and pretty much planed away. There was the odd hole and it was flipping marginal, but I was planing for about half an hour in beautiful sunshine. Then the wind dropped and the current took me uncomfortably far downwind. It had me worried for a moment, but it picked up again and I managed to claw my way back to where I'd parked my car. Another guy turned up at that point so I thought I'd stay out a little longer, even though it was obvious the wind was on its last legs. The other guy was on a 6.8 and 91lt board with no uphaul (you know whats coming). We were both a good way out and the wind switched to cross off at the same time as pretty much switching off, so it was a long drift along the coast before touching land again and then a very long walk - the kind that even Weathercam would have to train for.

Not the best sail, but still great to be out in the sun. I found my 6.5 really heavy after being spoilt with so many small sail sessions this autumn/winter. Time for a new mast and boom I think and maybe some other new kit - so watch out for a bit of Gutted indecision in the equipment thread soon.
